Christmas in Lucca: markets, lights and magic in the historic centre

Charming markets, musical events, family activities… Lucca becomes even more intimate and welcoming during the holidays.

Visiting Lucca at Christmas means discovering a city that transforms: the Walls light up, squares turn into festive stages and the alleys are filled with the scent of spices, hot chocolate and tradition.

If you’re planning a holiday in Tuscany during the festive season, Lucca’s Christmas Markets are simply a must.

The sparkling heart: the French Christmas Village

Your first stop is Piazza Napoleone, where the famous French Christmas Village comes to life until 28 January 2026.

A small Provençal world made of wooden chalets, handcrafted textiles, lavender, Parisian perfumes and irresistible treats:

  • over 80 varieties of French cheeses
  • wines from the finest regions
  • Breton biscuits, macarons and artisanal chocolate
  • freshly baked baguettes and croissants

The Village is open every day (Monday 15:00–20:00, Tuesday to Sunday 9:30–20:00).

Christmas in San Frediano: creativity and Lucchese charm

From 6 December 2025 to 6 January 2026, the beautiful Piazza San Frediano hosts an intimate, authentic Christmas market where local artisans and makers present unique pieces, gift ideas and sweet holiday treats.

On two special dates – 7 and 13 December – the square comes alive with mimes, clowns and gospel music filling the air with festive energy.

Open daily 10:00–19:00, closed on 25 and 31 December.

Meraki Market, Arts & Crafts and Pure Chocolate: a city-wide Christmas

Throughout December, Lucca hosts a series of themed markets scattered among its alleys, loggias and monumental squares:

  • Meraki Christmas Market at Loggia di Palazzo Sani: 6, 7, 8, 13, 14, 20, 21, 22, 23 December
  • Arts & Crafts – Xmas Edition in Piazza San Giusto: 6, 7, 8, 13, 14, 15 December
  • Pure Chocolate in Piazza Anfiteatro: until 8 December, with workshops for adults and kids
  • And for vintage lovers, the Antiques Market (20–21 December) is unmissable: the second oldest in Italy, set among hidden courtyards and timeless artisan shops.

Artist lights and installations: picture-perfect corners

A Christmas visit to Lucca wouldn’t be complete without admiring the light installations that decorate the city’s landmarks.

From Palazzo Ducale to Piazza San Michele, from the Cathedral to the Anfiteatro, the city becomes a luminous canvas.

Some of the most enchanting installations include:

  • a giant walk-through Christmas bauble in Piazza Napoleone
  • Emiliana Martinelli’s starry sky in Piazza del Giglio
  • a forest of lights in Piazza della Cattedrale
  • Lumière Bohème by Francesco Zavattari in Piazza Cittadella
  • the nativity scene and Bark for Christmas by Michel Bouquillon in Piazza San Michele and Piazza Anfiteatro

Every corner becomes the perfect backdrop for a holiday selfie.

For the little ones… and not only!

Of course, Santa’s Village couldn’t be missing.

Hidden inside one of the courtyards in the historic centre, Santa’s Village is a delightful surprise for children, with elves, games and fairytale atmospheres. A must for families visiting Lucca.

Ice skating on the Walls: the most magical experience

One of the most beloved Christmas attractions in Lucca is the skating rink set on the Renaissance Walls, offering panoramic views of the illuminated city.

Perfect for families, groups of friends and couples looking for a romantic moment.

Christmas Markets beyond Lucca: festive villages nearby

If you’d like to explore the surroundings, there are many events worth visiting:
